FTPES is Much Slower Than FTP -- Is This Normal?

Greetings,
We're in the process of setting up our BestSync configurations. We want to use FTPES instead of FTP so that our FTP authentication will be encrypted. However, we've discovered that BestSync/FTPES takes about three times longer than BestSync/FTP.
FYI, our FTP server is Filezilla and we're using a 1024 bit cert (the shortest cert available in Filezilla). I've watched the CPU usage on both the BestSync client machine and the FileZilla server machine during the sync process and I see no significant CPU usage on either machine.
Is it typical for BestSync/FTPES to take approximately 3 times longer than BestSync/FTP? Is there anything we can do to significantly increase the speed of BestSync/FTPES?
Regards,
Jeff
